PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sound signal recording and reproducing device which relieves the discontinuity or noise superposition segments or drop-out of sound signals occurring in switching operation of a rotary head drum relating to the sound signals read out of a video tape. SOLUTION: The sound signal recording and reproducing device 10 has an FM demodulator 6 which demodulates the signals detected by the rotary heads 1A and 1B, a drop-out detector 7 which detects the drop-out and a waveform substitution device 11. The waveform substitution device 11 retrieves the resembling signals among the sound demodulation signals S6 at the timing approximate to the point of the time when the head switching pulses S2 generated in switching of the rotary heads 1A and 1B and/or the drop-out detection signals S7 detected by the drop-out detector 7 are generated according to these signals and substitutes the discontinuity or noise superposition segments or drop-out segments of the sound signals occurring in the switching operation for the resembling signals.
