An apparatus (5) for securing a stent on a balloon catheter comprises a first clamping portion (6) provided with a first clamping portion recess (7). The first clamping portion recess (7) is sized and is adapted to receive a stent crimping sleeve. A second clamping portion (8) is provided with a second clamping portion recess (9) which is sized and adapted to receive a stent crimping sleeve. The first clamping portion recess (7) and second clamping portion recess (9) defines a longitudinal stent crimping sleeve channel (10) having variable cross sectional diameter. Clamping portions (6,8) are adapted for movement in a first direction away from each other to first position and a second direction toward each other to a second position (D2) to selectively impart pressure to a stent crimping sleeve disposed in the longitudinal stent crimping sleeve channel (10). Channel (10) has a circular cross sectional diameter when clamping portions (6,8) are in the second position (D2). Stent crimping sleeve is disposed in channel (10) and has a first end, a second end, an outer surface and an inner surface defining a longitudinal stent crimping bore. The bore has a selectively variable circular cross sectional diameter and is sized and adapted to receive a balloon catheter with a stent mounted thereon. The stent crimping sleeve is adapted to selectively and uniformly vary the circular cross-sectional diameter of the longitudinal stent crimping bore in response to pressure applied to the external surface of crimping sleeve by first and second clamping portions when first and second clamping portions are moved in the second direction. |
