The data transmission uses three layers of protocol: a first layer - a Radio Resource Control layer (RRC) is responsible for the management of the physical resource and for guaranteeing the quality of service; a second sub-layer - a Radio Link Control layer (RLC) is responsible for the provision of a transmission support conforming to the required quality of the service; and a third sub-layer - a Medium Access Control layer (MAC) is responsible for access to the physical resource. The method for transmission of data on a physical resource, such as a mobile radio link, uses three layers of protocol. A first layer - a Radio Resource Control layer (RRC) is responsible for the management of the physical resource and for guaranteeing the quality of service. A second sub-layer - a Radio Link Control layer (RLC) is responsible for the provision of a transmission support conforming to the required quality of the service. A third sub-layer - a Medium Access Control layer (MAC) is responsible for access to the physical resource, whilst the physical layer (PHY) provides the physical processing of data. Access to the physical resource is divided into transmission time intervals (TTI), the sub-layer (RLC) being able to segment the data into transmission units. The second sub-layer (MAC) is able to transmit at least one transmission unit per transmission time interval.
