Spacers (6,7) maintain an air gap between the polished plate and the lower surface of the watch glass. The laser is produced by a YAG type laser source, and the polished reflecting plate is made either from steel or chrome. The watch glass is convex, and is made of sapphire which is capable of being etched by the laser treatment. The wavelength of the laser light is between 1000 and 1100 nm, with best results being achieved with a source of 1064 nm.
