PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuously variable transmission to be driven through a belt during advancing but not through a belt during reversing, and shorten an axial size, and provide an increased life for the belt. SOLUTION: The continuously variable transmission comprises an input shaft 3 connected to an engine output shaft 1 through an advancing mechanism 2; a driven shaft 10 which has a drive pulley 11 and to which a power is transmitted from an input shaft; a driven shaft 20 having a driven pulley 21; a belt 15 between the two pulleys; and an output shaft 32 to transmit the power of the driven shaft 20 to wheels. The moving sheaves of the pulleys are moved in a reverse direction by actuators 14 and 22 of the two pulleys 10 and 21. The portions on the opposite engine sides of a power shaft 4 and the drive shaft 10 are interconnected through a first direct coupling transmission mechanism 13 and the portions on the engine side, situated closer to the driven pulley, of the input shaft 3 and the driven shaft 20 are interconnected through a direct transmission mechanism 26. A switching means 25 for a reversing position and a neutral and advancing position is situated at the second direct coupling transmission mechanism 26 and a belt slip means during reversing is provided.
