A method is provided for promoting the growth of at least one anaerobic fungus in the rumen of a ruminant animal. The method comprises the step of administering to the rumen an effective amount of a degradation resistant sulphur source in the form of 3-mercaptopropanoic acid (MPA); it's salts, esters or dimer. Also provided is a veterinary preparation comprising MPA.
