PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magneto-optical recording medium in which the erasing magnetic field can be decreased while suppressing increase in the reproducing magnetic field. SOLUTION: The magneto-optical recording medium contains a magnetic reproducing layer having easy magnetization property in the perpendicular direction to the film plane, a magnetic intermediate layer formed on the magnetic reproducing layer and having easy magnetization property in the plane direction at room temperature, and a magnetic recording layer formed on the magnetic intermediate layer and having easy magnetization property in the perpendicular direction to the film plane. The magnetic reproducing layer has the composition of GdxFeCoy, wherein x and y satisfys 22 at.%<=x<=25 at.% and 16 at.%<=y<=23 at.%.
