A circuit for controlling a valve 10 includes a solenoid 14 having a coil 56 and a permanent magnet 90. A pair of switching circuits is connected to the first and second ends of the coil. When the first switching circuit is activated, current passes through the coil in one direction to move the permanent magnet in a first axial direction. When the second switching circuit is activated, current passes through the coil in a second direction to move the permanent magnet in a second axial direction.
