The method involves inserting one lead of a filament through a bore (113) in a cathode cup (52) to a filament height below the desired height. The current height is then measured and compared with the desired height to derive a height adjustment. The end of the filament lead is then contacted with a setting tool (100,102,106) and the tool moved by a distance essentially equal to the height adjustment. Independent claims are also included for a device for setting desired filament height.
