The internal combustion engine includes a fuel injector(41) with a lower and an upper section. The top part(415) of the upper section is exposed above the rocker cover(5), and a pattern(61) for identification of the injector is installed on the top part of the upper section so that it is readable from outside the engine. The rocker cover may be in two sections with one(51) over the inlet valve gear and the other(52) over the exhaust valve gear, with the upper section of the injector protruding from the cylinder head through the gap between the two rocker cover sections. An Independent claim is included for a device for reading the pattern which includes a recording unit with optic detectors and a data storage facility.
