This invention provides an integrated electrode comprising an aerogel solid dielectric material that may be used to make an electrical connection to an outside power source within a capacitive deionization capacitor or other electrochemical storage devices. Specifically, there is provided in one embodiment, an integrated electrode (50) that comprises a porous conductive layer (51); an at least two layers (52) of a porous insulating layer wherein the conductive layer is interposed between the at least two layers of the insulating layer to form a porous conductive substrate; and a high surface area material (53) that is impregnated within the pores of the conductive substrate to form the integrated electrode.
