Extracting and analyzing analytes in an analysis device, e.g. a gas chromatograph (12), comprises using a beak (16), such as a hollow needle or tube having an inner wall as stationary phase partially with a coating on which the analytes adsorb. The sample (10) is rinsed repeatedly through the beak and the analytes are dissolved by desorption of the coating and inserted into the analysis device. Carrier fluid (18) passes through the beak during the desorption phase of the analytes and the analytes desorbed by the coating are inserted into the analysis device by means of the carrier fluid.
