The system has a system for automatically determining the position above a base surface (1) and contains the crane (2) on crane rails (3,4) with a crane carriage (10) and sensors (7,8). A fixed installed reference line (5,6) bounding a working area in the base surface is detected by the sensors and passed to an evaluation unit for controlling the crane. Markers are arranged along the reference line in the direction of travel for crane orientation.
