Cutting device consists of a horizontal axially moving screw unit (1) with a separately operable cutting head (2) for horizontally removing molten metal residues and/or slags deposited on the inner sides of the container walls. The maximum screw outer diameter corresponds to the diameter of the cutting head and the maximum diameter of the cutting head corresponds to the inner diameter of the container. The cutting head has cooling front and peripheral cutting tools (4). The cutting head geometry corresponds to the base geometry of the container. The weight ratio of the cutting tools to the melt residues and/or slags is large so that during the processing time it remains below the solid region of the cutting tools, the cutting head and the screw wings. Preferably the device is arranged in a frame with integrated axial and radial guiding elements (6).
