The invention relates to a device and a method for separating aluminium and grey iron chips from a mixture of chips. The chips are collected and fed to a first conveyor path (20). Said chips are conveyed along the first conveyor path (20) and then subjected to a magnetic field in such a way that the aluminium chips leave the first conveyor path (20) at a first point (34), due to the effect of gravity, while the grey iron chips, retained by the force of magnetic attraction of the magnetic fields, follow the first conveyor path (20) for a predetermined distance before also leaving this conveyor path (20) at a second point (36). The chips are picked up separately from each other at said first and second points (34, 36).
