A filter unit (12) which includes a cross-flow filtration assembly is provided. The cross-flow filtration assembly includes an elongate cylindrical filter housing (30) having an interior cylindrical wall defining an elongate filter cavity; a tangential feed inlet (14) in fluid communication with the filter cavity extending substantially tangential to the interior cylindrical wall and an opposed retentate outlet port (18) in fluid communication with the filter cavity; and an elongate cylindrical filter cartridge (33) supported in the filter housing (3). A spiral fluid guide (56) spans between the interior cylindrical wall of the filter housing (30) and the outer filter surface of the cartridge (33) to define a spiral fluid passageway (58) extending between the feed inlet (14) and retentate outlet (18) ports. The spiral fluid passageway (58) imparts secondary flow currents, particularly Dean-Flow currents, to fluid flowing therethrough to prevent particulate build-up on the filter media (34). |
