A blade 19 is inserted into a collapsed carton 11 and moved transversely with the carton over an arcuate path between curved walls 17, 18 so that the wall portion 15 of the carton extending laterally of the blade pivots about a score line adjacent to the edge of blade 19 through an obtuse angle so as to cause the carton firstly to open and then partially to collapse in the opposite direction. The blade 19 is attached to a flat surface 29 cut diametrically across the boss 31 of an arm pivotally mounted in an actuating arm 33 slidably mounted on a square shaft 34 with a camoperated arm 37. The arm 33 is embraced by a housing 39 reciprocated on a slide bar 41 by a link 42 and a cam mechanism. The arm 32 is connected by a link 43 to the housing 39 to form with the actuating arm 33 a parallel motion linkage. For insertion into successive cartons 11, the blade 19 is thus reciprocated by the housing 39. The collapsed cartons are for along a supporting platform 12 by a chain conveyer 13 and are seized in succession by grippers 16 and positioned over the mouth of the arcuate channel formed by the curved walls 17, 18. The blade 19 then enters the collapsed carton and moves arcuately down the channel, the upper portion of the wall 17 forming an abutment which causes the wall 15 of the carton to pivot through more than 90 degrees. The channel guides the carton to a pocketted conveyer 44, the wall 18 of the channel being cut away to allow passage of the pockets. The wall 17 of the channel comprises a pair of spring-urge fingers. |
