Preparation of bis(organosilylalkyl)-polysulfanes (I) comprises reacting bis(organosilylalkyl)-polysulfanes (II), which has a longer sulfur (S) chain than (I), with an ionic alkali(ne earth), ammonium or zinc sulfide (III) and a corresponding organosilylalkyl halide (IV) by adding (III) in several portions to the solution of long-chain (II) and (III). Preparation of bis(organosilylalkyl)-polysulfanes of formula (I) comprises reacting bis(organosilylalkyl)-polysulfanes of formula (II), which has a longer sulfur (S) chain than (I), with an ionic alkali(ne earth), ammonium or zinc sulfide of formula (III) and a corresponding organosilylalkyl halide of formula (IV) by adding (III) in several portions to the solution of long-chain (II) and (III): (R<1>R<2>R<3>SiR<4>)2Sx (I) (R<1>R<2>R<3>SiR<4>)2Sx (II) M<+>2S<2-> (III) R<1>R<2>R<3>SiR<4> (IV) R<1>, R<2>, R<3> = branched or linear 1-8 C alkyl and/or alkoxy or aryl, including at least one alkoxy group; R<4> = divalent 1-8 C alkylene or -(CH2)n-C6H4-(CH2)n; n = 1-4; x = 1 or more; y = more than x; M<+> = alkali metal cation, ammonium ion, half alkaline earth metal cation or half zinc cation; X = chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br) or iodine (I).
