<p>An implantable radiation therapy device (10) includes a biocompatible radiotranslucent outer capsule (12) containing a radiation shielding element (24a) and a radioactive isotope (30) at least partially shielded by the shielding element (24a). When the device (10) is at or below body temperature, radiation is prevented or limited from being transmitted through the outer capsule (12) by the shielding element (24a). When non-ambient energy is applied to the device (10), the shielding element (24a) and radioactive isotope (30) are reconfigured such that an increased level of radiation is transmitted through the outer capsule (12) and emitted by the device (10).</p> |
