The device has arrangement for detecting an operating state of a switch related to starter operation and a device for disabling automatic stoppage of the starter based on the output of the detection arrangement if the vehicle is in an unusual situation, e.g. when the lock cylinder has been continually placed in a starting position by the starter switch for a predefined number of times within a defined period. The device is designed to stop the starter automatically based on a change in voltage caused by turning the starter. It contains an arrangement (63,64A) for detecting an operating state of a switch (2) related to the operation of the starter and a function deactivation device (61) for disabling automatic stoppage of the starter based on the output of the detection arrangement if the vehicle is in an unusual situation, e.g. when the lock cylinder has been continually placed in a starting position by the starter switch for a predefined number of times within a defined period.
