METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR STEAM REFORMING OF CHAIN HYDROCARBON

A novel method for steam reforming of a chain hydrocarbon which comprises inducing electric direct current pulse discharges in a mixed gas containing a gaseous chain hydrocarbon and steam, thereby reacting the chain hydrocarbon with steam to form hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The method exhibits a high selectivity toward carbon monoxide, causes only a few side reactions, can be practiced at a lower temperature and under a lower pressure than those for conventional steam reforming methods, and can be performed without the use o f a catalyst.
