PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plating solution for depositing an iron oxide magnetic thin film excellent in crystallinity and surface properties, to provide a magnetic thin film and to provide a method for producing the magnetic thin film. SOLUTION: A plating solution composed of a solution containing iron ions, nitrate ions and dimethylamineborane and/or trimethylamineborane is used, and nitrate nitrite reduction reaction is utilized. Namely, iron hydroxide is formed on the surface by OH- released when nitrate ions are reduced into nitrite ions by borane and is thereafter made iron oxide. Moreover, the irradiation of light with a wavelength of <=400μm may jointly be used. Further, it is possible that an initial precipitated layer is formed by the above reaction, and, with the same as a cathode, an iron oxide film is deposited by electrolysis.
