PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide fibrous gypsum with a novel structure comprising a much longer fiber than that of conventional fibrous gypsum, a method of producing the same, particularly desulfogypsum of low quality a obtained by the flue gas desulfurization. SOLUTION: The gypsum powder is dissolved in hydrochloric acid of 2-6 mole/l concentration at 60-105 deg.C and the solution or slurry formed of gypsum in hydrochloric acid is cooled down to 0-30 deg.C to precipitate gypsum crystals whereby the objective fibrous gypsum dihydrate including fibrous crystals of >=2 mm length and of 1-200μm diameter is characteristically obtained.
