PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent time and power from being consumed uselessly at the time of printing. SOLUTION: The color thermal printer comprises means for carrying a color thermal recording sheet having at least first through third thermal coloring layers developing different colors, a thermal head coming into pressure contact with the color thermal recording sheet to develop a color selectively from one kind of thermal coloring layer, a unit for fixing a color developed thermal coloring layer before color is developed from next thermal coloring layer, a cutter for cutting the peripheral margin of a print area upon finishing print, and means for selecting execution or nonexecution of cutting of the margin wherein the margin is fixed by means of the fixing unit upon finishing print on each thermal coloring layer. At the time of starting print, a decision is made whether the peripheral margin of a print area on the color thermal recording sheet is cut or not. When the margin is cut, fixing of the margin is omitted and the margin is cut upon finishing print and then the color thermal recording sheet is discharged.
