PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form by a simple method a transparent photocatalytic coating film with a controlled film thickness without causing coating irregularity, maltiple coating or uncoated areas. SOLUTION: The coating composition comprises a photocatalytic semiconductor material such as a titanium oxide sol or the like, a hardly decomposable binding agent such as a hydrolyzable silane, a polyorganosiloxane or the like, a dye selected among an anionic dye, a cationic dye and a dye having a specific structure and easily decomposed and decolored by a photocatalytic action, and a solvent. The method for manufacturing an article coated with the photocatalytic coating comprises a step of applying and drying the coating and a step of irradiating ultraviolet rays. As the dye, is employed at least one of triphenyl methane-based, triarylmethane-based, xanthene-based and azo- based dyes, and more preferably a xanthene-based dye.
