PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a practical method which divides organic substances in sewage into detail components by using the easiness in utilization of microorganisms as a measure and which determines the concentration of the components. SOLUTION: The total COD of sewage is divided into easily decomposable substrates Ss, hydrolysis substrates Xs1, Xs2 and microorganisms XB, the change in the oxygen utilization rate OUR of the sewage with the passage of time is obtained, and yields are obtained by the change in the OUR after adding the easily decomposable substrates to the sewage. The concentration of the above easily decomposable substrate Ss is obtained by the change in the OUR at the time of completely consuming the easily decomposable substrates in the sewage after initiation of measuring the OUR and by the above yields, and the concentration XB of the microorganisms is obtained by the OUR at the time of the measuring initiation, the above yields, the specific growth rate of the microorganisms, and the constant of the energy consumption rate for survival of the microorganisms. Then the respective concentration of the hydrolysis substrates Xs1, Xs2 is obtained by the respectively obtained concentration of the organic substances and the actual value of the OUR.
