PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to perform driving by hand in an apparatus for cutting a fabric of a sewing machine. SOLUTION: In the apparatus for cutting the fabric for forming a hole in the above described article to be sewn by placing the article to be sewn between a knife 22 and a knife receiver 23 and lowering the knife 22 toward the knife receiver 23, a ball screw member 14a, a driving shaft 18, a motor 11 for rotating the ball screw member 14a, a housing 15 straightly moving back and forth by rotating of the ball screw member 14a, a link mechanism consisting of links 16 and 16 and a lever 17 for rotating a driving shaft 18 in a specified direction in accordance with the moving direction of the housing 15 and a driving means consisting of a pinion gear 19 and a rack member 20 for converting rotational movement of the driving shaft 18 to a straight line movement to drive the knife 22 are provided and by fixing one end of the lever 17 on the driving shaft 18, the knife 22 is driven back and forth by means of the motor 11.
