PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain glass for a top plate tar a copying machine, having excellent mechanical strength and wear resistance, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This glass for a top plate for a copying machine having a metal oxide thin film is readily obtained by providing the surface of a top plate glass substrate for a copying machine with a composition for a metal oxide thin film consisting essentially of zirconium oxide and crystallizing the composition. The composition has a zirconium component and a metal component except zirconium. The zirconium component is a salt of a zirconium complex or a zirconium salt formed from an aminopolycarboxylic acid and a zirconium compound and an amine. The metal component except zirconium is a compound containing a metal except zirconium. The ratio of the zirconium component is 70 to 98 mol% calculated as zirconium oxide and that of the metal component except zirconium is 2 mol% to 30 mol% calculated as the metal oxide in the whole metal component of the composition.
