PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeding device capable of reliably feeding a paper sheet, nipped between a feed roller and a retard roller, to a cassette and performing stable paper feed/separation operation. SOLUTION: A separating means to separate fed paper sheets S from each other consists of a feed roller 201 rotated in a sheet transporting direction and a retard roller 202 positioned opposite to the feed roller 201 and rotated following the feed roller and applying given torque in an opposite direction to a sheet transporting direction. A drive transmitting means to transmit drive to the separating means comprises a drive limit means consisting of a ratchet 215 having a one-way clutch to transmit rotational drive in a sheet conveying direction to the feed roller 201 and a claw 220, and a holder 211 disconnecting and connecting the drive limit means and capable of effecting elevation operation.
