Reconstitutable solubilized collagen is prepared by extracting native collagen fibres in an aqueous solution of an organic acid at a temperature above 30 DEG C., but not over 70 DEG C., to solubilize the collagen in the fibres, the organic acid having a concentration from 0.01 to 1 molar and being selected from citric, glycolic, lactic, hydroxybutyric, benzilic and glycerol phosphoric acids, the extraction being carried out and completed in a period of less than four hours. The solubilized collagen extract may be admixed with native collagen fibres and the resulting mixture formed, e.g. as sheets or threads.ALSO:Collagen in forms such as sheets or threads may be obtained by re-aggregating, e.g. by heat coagulation, neutralization or salting out, a reconstitutable solubilized collagen prepared by extracting native collagen fibres in an aqueous solution of an organic acid at a temperature above 30 DEG C., but not over 70 DEG C., to solubilize the collagen in the fibres, the organic acid having a concentration from 0.01 to 1 molar and being selected from citric, glycolic, lactic, hydroxybutyric, benzilic and glycerol phosphoric acids, the extraction being carried out and completed in a period of less than four hours. Native collagen fibres may be added to the solubilized collagen fibres before forming, which is preferably effected by treatment with a half-saturated ammonium sulphate solution made basic with ammonium hydroxide.
|
