PURPOSE: A shift control apparatus of an automatic transmission and a method thereof are provided to improve driving experience and increase the durability of the transmission by enhancing shift quality with preventing shift shock. CONSTITUTION: A shift control device of an automatic transmission is composed of a travel state detecting unit(10) outputting an electric signal by receiving the signal according to the travel state; a control unit(20) outputting a duty control signal in outputting a 2-speed power on upshift control signal during 1-speed traveling by reading the signal from the travel state detecting unit, and outputting a control signal for shifting to 2-range without duty control in leading turbine rpm to the 2-range synchronized shifting end point; and a driving unit(30) finishing shifting without change of the speed range by controlling hydraulic pressure to a kickdown brake. Driving experience is improved by reducing shift shock.
