A first annular layer 7 of silicone rubber is extruded over a tubular support element 4 in extrusion station 5, the outer surface of which is unsuitable for bonding with silicone rubber. A tubular mesh or braiding 9 is then formed or fitted on layer 7 in mesh-forming station 19. A second annular layer 11 of silicone rubber is then extruded over layer 7 and over the mesh or braiding 9 in extrusion station 12. A passage through a cooling bath 14, a cutting station 15 and a maturing station then takes place. The element 4 is then detached to provide a tubular element (16) (figure 7, not shown). A flow of gaseous fluid may be blown into element 4.
