A program and/or data is written into a memory in a plug-in module (27) or into a standalone device only when a payment is made. In some embodiments, the programs and/or data is stored in an encrypted form on CD-ROM (25) or other types of media, and a decryption code is obtained via the Internet (23). In other embodiments, the data is obtained via the Internet. Either decryption of the data or writing of the data is inhibited until appropriate payment is made, and access to the write data is prevented after the write operation has occurred. |
