A preformed component has a chemical reagent, that can react reversibly with a gas, is dispersed through a porous substrate formed from stacked thin layers of carbon fibers. The layers are connected together by fibers extending through them. Independent claims are included for the following: (a) the formation of the component by assembling the layered substrate, impregnating it with the a liquid composition containing the reagent and then drying the substrate. (b) the filling of a thermo-chemical reactor with the components.
