Sample is momentarily illuminated by a modulated beam of coherent, long-wavelength light. A succession of interference signals is produced and recorded over an interval. Diffuse light leaving the sample, is superposed onto light sampled from the incident beam. Each interference signal is combined with a reference signal (Ref(t, tau o)). This generates a gate interval centered on a predetermined delay ( tau o). The continuous component of each signal characteristic of the delay is extracted. The sample is momentarily illuminated by a modulated beam of coherent, long-wavelength light. A succession of interference signals is produced and recorded over an interval. For this purpose, diffuse light leaving the sample, is superposed onto light sampled from the incident beam. Each interference signal is combined with a reference signal (Ref(t, tau o)). This generates a gate interval centered on a predetermined delay ( tau o). A signal characteristic of the delay results. The continuous component of each signal characteristic of the delay is extracted. A non-linear function is applied to each such characteristic component. A linear combination is effected of each of the images of the continuous components of signals characteristic of the predetermined delay, through the non-linear function. An Independent claim is included for corresponding analytical equipment.
