Radio collision between radio based security systems on two vehicles (V1,V2) may be overcome by making identification system (M1) emit shortened codes after an initial failure to authenticate a response. The shortened code is sufficient to establish the presence of an identifier but not to authenticate it and preferably consists of portions of the full code emitted at random times within successive time intervals
