A method of manufacturing impact tools, e.g. rivet sets for riveting hammers, wherein the tool is machined to shape and thereafter heat treated is further characterized by subsequently removing the structurally deformed layer of the tool at least at those areas adjacent to changes in crosssection of the tool at which fracture of the tool is liable to occur in use thereof. In an embodiment the shank 1 of a rivet set having a shape as shown by the chain line 10 in the drawing is fine machined after being heat treated to the shape shown by the chain line 9 or undercut to provide a taper 5 and a fillet 7 merging tangentially into the top surface 8 of the die head 3 of the set. The groove 6 in the die head is also fine turned or ground to remove the structurally disturbed surface layer. |
