A safety hinge 10 comprises a fixed frame member 12 and a movable pivoting member 14, the pivoting member 14 capable of moving between closed and open positions. One of the members 12, 14 defines a curved surface opposed to a surface of the other member and the members are arranged so that the shortest distance between the surfaces when the hinge is open is less than or equal to the shortest distance between them when the hinge is closed. Both the frame member 12 and pivoting member 14 may define opposed curved surfaces and both surfaces may be equally curved. The shortest distance between the surfaces when the hinge is open and when closed may be equal. The pivoting member may define a convex curved surface 16. The hinge may be arranged so that the shortest distance between the surfaces prevents a finger from gaining access between the surfaces. When the hinge is open and when closed, at least portions of the surfaces are opposed, and the pivot axis 20 of the pivoting member 12 may be located centrally of the surface of the fixed member 14. The safety hinge may be included in a door. Also disclosed is a safety hinge comprising a fixed frame member and pivoting member, where one of these members defines a convex face opposed to a surface of the other and the pivoting member is mounted on a pivot axis. The convex face describes an arc of curvature greater or equal to that of a circle with the pivot access at its centre. |
