A method that controls actuation force in apparatus for determining entrained gas-phase content of process streams which method comprises compression of the process stream, measurement of the compressive behavior, and calculation of the volume of any entrained gas phase. A piston device (11, 13, 14, 20) is rapidly translated into the process stream, whereupon the inertia of the liquid adjacent to the end of the impacting piston causes the volume of fluid close to the end of the piston to be compressed by the movement of the piston. A pressure sensor (14) integrally incorporated into the end of the piston measures the resulting pressure pulse so as to receive pressure pulses that are inversely proportional to entrained gas phase content. An accelerometer incorporated within the piston detects changes in acceleration due to actuator hysteresis and seal friction which are compensated for by automatically changing power applied to the actuator device (7) to maintain constant acceleration. |
