SOLUTION: The hydrocarbon decomposing material has a basic composition composed of Ti1-xZrxNiy, wherein (x) is in the range of 0<=x<=0.7, (y) is in the range of 0.4<=y<=3, or a basic composition composed of Ca1Niz, where (z) is in the range of 1<=z<=6, and a hydrocarbon decomposing device uses this material. As a result, hydrogen, or the like, is efficiently separated without causing the production of by-products such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide by the direct decomposition of the hydrocarbons to enable the effective utilization of hydrogen or the efficient recovery of the hydrogen isotope. The decomposition is performed at a relatively low temperature and pressure to simplify the device.
