3-amino-4-hydroxybenzoic acid or a derivative thereof is used in the preparation of a medicament for treating retroviral infections and HIV in particular. The 3-amino-4-hydroxybenzoic acid or a derivative thereof is also included in a pharmaceutical composition in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and any of vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin C or a combination of two or more thereof.
