PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for making electrolytic water, having a function for absorbing and removing byproduct gases such as chlorine gas and hydrogen gas, which are formed as byproducts when electrolytic water containing hypochlorous acid and having sterilizing capacity is made in a large-sized electrolytic water making apparatus and become a problem from an aspect of sanitation and environmental control, or discharging them in a harmless state. SOLUTION: In the method and apparatus for making electrolytic water, an aqueous solution of a chloride of at least one metal selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium is electrolyzed to make electrolytic water containing hypochlorous acid. The chlorine gas generated as a byproduct in the electrolytic water making process is absorbed and removed by alkali water and the byproduct hydrogen gas generated in the process is mixed with air to be diluted to concentration less than an explosion low limit to be discharged to the atmosphere. The method and apparatus for making electrolytic water, including a two-stage type electrolytic process including a diaphragm-free electrolytic cell and, a diaphragm electrolytic cell as electrolytic cells are also disclosed.
