PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing in high yield the subject aromatic compound by gas phase ammoxidation process from the corresponding aromatic compound having alkyl substituents adjacent to each other, and to provide a long-life catalyst to be applied to the above method. SOLUTION: This method for producing the subject aromatic compound is characterized by comprising gas phase reaction of the corresponding aromatic compound having alkyl substituents adjacent to each other with both ammonia and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst comprising respective oxides of vanadium, chromium, tungsten and an alkaline earth metal. The other objective catalyst for use in the above method is also provided. |
