PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder, and a method for detecting the state of ink in an ink jet recording head, in which the state of ink in the ink jet recording head can be detected efficiently while employing an ink detection system of extremely simple arrangement applicable commonly to various recording systems. SOLUTION: An ink ejection means 2102 and an ink state detecting means 2103 are provided on a substrate 101 for ink jet recording head and the state of ink in the ink jet recording head is detected based on a detection signal 2107 from the ink state detecting means 2103 during recording operation.
