PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new neurocyte activation agent effective for improving the NGF(nerve growth factor)-like action and NGF action and provide a composition useful for the prevention of the injury of cranial nerve cell by p-amyloid protein, etc. SOLUTION: The cranial nerve cell activation agent contains SQDG expressed by formula (I) (R1 and R2 are each an alkyl residue or an alkenyl residue of a 14-22C fatty acid containing 0-6 double bonds) as an active component and the pharmaceutical or food composition is produced by formulating the activation agent. The SQDG is preferably extracted from algae such as red algae and brown algae.
