In a shutoff device, a shutoff body (2) is movable by a drive between abutments (1a, 5b). For the purposes of reducing noise and preventing so-called "valve chatter", a friction brake (6) is movable with the shutoff body (2) between control bodies (5a; 3d, 3e) at which the friction brake (6) arrives a friction distance (R1, R2) before the time at which the shutoff body (2) reaches each abutment (1a, 5b). The friction brake (6) rubs along a friction surface (3a; 8a) during the movement of the shutoff body (2) along the friction distance (R1, R2). (FIG. 1)
