The machine comprises a tunnel (1) for folding the lateral longitudinal edges of the paper band (13) on itself in a zone adjoining each edge. A band drive located upstream of the tunnel consists of two superposed rollers (2,3) held in contact with each other. A second set of superposed rollers (4,5) comprises a pair of rollers localized at the level of each of the folded edges. The rollers of the same pair are run in a rotational movement at the same speed in opposite directions. Each of the rollers is coated with a knurled surface which improves the friction of its outer cylindrical surface.
