PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having enhanced durability and enhanced electromagnetic characteristics in the high density recoding medium. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium obtained by disposing an underlayer containing at least a nonmagnetic powder on a substrate and at least one magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder on the underlayer, at least one compound of formula (1) (where R1-R4 are each a 2-7C alkyl) is contained in at least the underlayer.
