PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device capable of speedily changing the setting by an easy operation by solving such problem that, in a conventional device, a user has had to instruct the device on the same setting change again so as to bring it into such a state as a setting change can be executed after the user instructed the device on the setting change. SOLUTION: When the recording and reproducing device is instructed to change an aspect ratio during reproduction (ST11), the device judges that the aspect ratio cannot be changed (ST12), and displays an error (ST13, 14). When the device is instructed to change the aspect ratio (ST11) again, it judges the change as impossible (ST12), and judges that an error is being displayed (ST13). When the device judges that this key-in is the same as the preceding one (ST15), it stops reproducing and comes into the state in which the aspect ratio can be changed (ST16). When it is instructed to set the aspect ratio (ST11), it judges that setting of the aspect ratio can be changed, and changes it (ST12, 19, 18).
