PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for manufacturing a friction material which may inhibit a decrease in the fibrillating property of an aramid fiber caused by a static electricity generated in the fibrillation step and a decrease in its workability caused by its adhesion to an axe, and further provide a raw material for friction materials. SOLUTION: In the process for manufacturing a friction material including a fibrillation step 103 of an aramid fiber 1, an electrically conductive substance- adding step 102 wherein an electrically conductive substance 2 is added to the aramid fiber 1 is introduced before the fibrillation step 103. The raw material for brake friction materials containing an aramid fiber is manufactured by adding from 10 to 20 wt.% graphite 2 against the aramid fiber 1 to the aramid fiber 1 before the fibrillation step 103.
